猴科生活习性通过叫声、手势和身体接触进行交流 。视觉、听觉、嗅觉均发达 。群居 。既善于攀援、奔跑，也善于游泳 。大多为杂食性、吃植物性或动物性食物，主要包括水果、嫩枝、野菜和树叶等，有时也吃甲虫和蠕虫 。选择食物和取食方法各异，猩猩的食量很大，几乎把绝大部分的活动时间用以觅食 。疣猴科胃的构造特殊，大部种类吃粗纤维多的植物性食物 。繁殖方式每年繁殖1-2次，每胎1仔，少数可多到3仔 。幼体生长比较缓慢 。哺乳期多抓爬在雌性体胸、腹部或骑在雌性背上，由雌性带着活动 。性成熟的雌性有月经，雄性能在任何时间交配 。分布範围分布于非洲和亚洲 。
